Background of the Study
Accounting standards are critical in ensuring transparency, accountability, and proper management of school funds in public institutions (Oladipo & Ibrahim, 2023). In Kano State, the management of school funds, particularly in public secondary schools, has been plagued by inefficiency, lack of transparency, and poor financial controls (Muhammad & Saleh, 2024). The introduction of accounting standards aims to standardize financial reporting and improve the way resources are allocated and spent in schools.
Accounting standards guide the preparation of financial statements, ensuring that funds are allocated and spent according to approved budgets and that expenditures are properly documented (Ahmed & Kola, 2025). In Kano State, many schools struggle with inadequate application of these standards, leading to financial mismanagement and corruption (Alhassan & Yusuf, 2023). The lack of trained financial officers, weak internal controls, and limited awareness of accounting standards among school administrators contribute to these issues.
Research has shown that the adoption of formal accounting standards in school fund management leads to more accurate financial reporting, better fund allocation, and enhanced accountability (Kemi & Mustapha, 2023). This study seeks to examine how accounting standards are applied in the management of school funds in Kano State and the effect of their adoption on financial transparency and accountability.
Statement of the Problem
In Kano State, public schools often face financial management challenges that hinder the effective use of allocated resources. These challenges are exacerbated by the inconsistent application of accounting standards, leading to mismanagement of funds and a lack of financial accountability (Muhammad & Saleh, 2024). Despite the introduction of accounting standards, many school administrators are either unaware of them or lack the capacity to apply them effectively, undermining their role in enhancing school financial management.
This study investigates the role of accounting standards in the management of school funds in Kano State, examining the barriers to their effective implementation and the implications for financial accountability in public schools.
